Discover the peace and beauty of your own secluded Arts + Crafts-style house perched on the southern ridge of Ohayo Mountain with an expansive (180 degree) view of the Ashokan Reservoir surrounded by mountains. Watch the sun rise above the Hudson River Valley and set behind the high peaks of the Catskill Mountains (and see the colors reflected not only in the clouds above, but also in the water below). On a clear day, you can see the Mohonk tower in the Shawangunk range due south. On a cloudy day, the formations drift past you like passing sailing ships!
This idyllic Woodstock retreat started out as a rustic mountain cabin with a large stone fireplace and exposed chimney. Since then it has been expanded and updated by a master stone mason and carpenter to include two second floor bedroom wings (each accessed by separate stairways) with cathedral ceilings, oversize picture windows, and glass doors that open onto private balconies. The first floor “great room” consists of a country kitchen with a breakfast bar/island, a living room with a free-standing cast-iron fire stove (as well as the original fireplace), and a dining area with sliding glass doors that open onto a spacious railed, multi-level deck with steps down to a stone patio that wraps around the house and descends partway down the mountain in a series of terraced gardens. In addition there’s a TV/music room with an old-time upright piano and large flat screen TV, and a smaller guest bedroom opposite the first floor bathroom with a vintage tub and porcelain sink. The upstairs bathroom is tiled in cobalt blue, and features a large walk-in shower with a built-in tiled bench. A landing at the top of the east-wing stairway features a reading nook with a built-in cushioned bench and bookcase. There are examples of artistic craftsmanship in the woodwork, much of which is shaped/carved or inlaid; the stonework, which blends natural living rock formations with dry-laid meandering walls, steps, pathways and patios; and the gardens of flowering shrubs, vines, exotic trees and perennials. As charming as the house and grounds are, the real attraction is the breathtaking unobstructed view, which is visible from every room of the house and every patio, porch, deck, terrace and lookout on the property. In fact, you can even relax in a rustic plunge pool (12 ft. in diameter and 4 ft deep) that is built into an escarpment of rock on the far edge of the patio and enjoy the view from there!
